SDEP® CERTIFICATION PROGRAM

Certification for the Sonographic Diagnostic Efficiency Protocol (SDEP®) is awarded to the sonographer with the highest level of sonographic image capture skills (still & video) combined with the most diagnostically efficient manner of obtaining those images as well as the ability to verbalize key points of the SDEP® protocol.

Not only does this add a feather to your cap professionally, it also validates the diagnostic capabilities of your hospital and assures your pet owners that their pet is getting the best care possible.

Post lab, virtual training and support services are available through SonoPath’s educational telemedicine™ services where attendees can work with SonoPath remotely to perfect their image sets.

SDEP® Abdomen Certification

The SDEP® Abdomen progression was developed to image every type of abdominal pathology including the most challenging views.

The protocol employs a numbering system which references key points in the abdomen in order to identify certain structures such as the pylorus, the portal hilus, the pelvic urethra, adrenal glands, etc.

This system is a universal tool for direct and remote instruction. Specific positions can be referred to in order to direct optimization of the view for a particular pathology.

For SDEP® Abdomen certification, applicants must be able to complete the following:

  • Perform a diagnostic SDEP® 17 point abdomen in 15 minutes
  • Demonstrate proper measurements of kidneys and adrenals
  • Demonstrate higher-end views: follow cbd to d-pap, urethra 3-4 cm past CUJ, GES, pylorus, ICJ, interrogate for a FB, shunt hunt
  • Demonstrate proper use of power Doppler and color flow
  • Explain the advantages and limitations of the linear probe and demonstrate its use
  • Explain how to hold the SDEP® probe and reasoning behind it
  • Explain why the SDEP® progression enables diagnostic scans in a short period of training time
  • Explain how to adapt to large masses and ascites presentations
  • Scans may be required on one cat, one small dog, and one large dog
  • At least one submitted scan must be labeled with the SDEP® positions and target organ (eg RK, iliacs, pancreas, etc) on each video and still submitted. May be required on more than one scan at the discretion of SonoPath

SDEP® ECHO Certification

The SDEP® Echo progression also utilizes a numbering system to optimize every region of the heart to evaluate functions, velocities, pressures and chamber sizes.

SDEP® Echo includes three separate measurements for the left atrial measurements and all standard Doppler velocities. Alternative views image the right atrium and auricle to ensure visualization of heart base masses.

This protocol affords the most complete image set for evaluation of the heart from acquired to congenital disease.

For SDEP® ECHO certification, applicants must be able to complete the following:

  • Perform a diagnostic SDEP® 7 point ECHO in 15 minutes

  • Be able to demonstrate the 5 SDEP® measurements correctly.
Explain the use of and rationale behind the different cardiac probe
  • Be able to perform correct color flow and Doppler flows and measurements

  • Scans may be required on one dog and one cat.
  • At least one submitted scan must be labeled with the SDEP® positions and target area. (eg M-mode, EPSS, LA max, etc.) on each video and still submitted. May be required on more than one scan at the discretion of SonoPath

Completing the Certification Program

SDEP® is an innovative standardization of the sonographic process to maximize the image sets of traditional and alternative approaches and facilitate in-house or telemed evaluation. This protocol is repeatable by any type of sonographer with a rapid learning curve of standard and high-end views as it's hallmark.

There are 3 requirements for initial SDEP® Certification, completed successfully in order, within a 12-month period following the applicant's initial registration date.

  1. Must have completed AT LEAST ONE (1) 3-day SonoPath SDEP® lecture/wet lab in that particular cavity in which certification is sought.
  2. Written quiz (online). The passing grade requirement is 90% correct as determined
solely by SonoPath.
  3. After passing the written quiz, the registrant may take the practical exam.
